COLA workshops are all offered online via Zoom. They are open to all graduate students at MSU. To register for COLA workshops, please follow the links on this page. Workshops this year are centered around three themes:

Workshop 5: Creating Inclusive Classrooms
Thursday, June 22

Facilitators: Dr. Caitlin Kirby, COLA Director and Associate Director of Research in EDLI, and Dr. Min Zhuang, Research Associate in EDLI
Theme: Accessibility and inclusion in digital teaching and learning
This workshop meets requirements for the Certificate in College Teaching Competency 2: Creating effective learning environments.
Instructors can influence students’ sense of belonging in classrooms and can develop inclusive course materials and assessments. We will discuss some principles of creating inclusive classrooms. Participants will also develop a strategy for how to integrate additional work on inclusion into their future teaching.
Workshop 6: Crafting and Managing Digital Portfolios

Theme: Developing a scholarly teaching identity
Participants will learn about the various online spaces and tools for hosting a professional portfolio or other digital professional presence. We will discuss strategies for managing your professional online persona and introduce participants to MSU Commons, MSU’s institutional repository and a place for digital scholarly work and networking.

In the COLA kick-off meeting on Weds May 17 from 2-3:30pm, we will introduce the fellowship, fellowship coordinators, and you will meet your cohort who you’ll work with throughout the summer. This event is only open to COLA fellows and we will email additional details.

Theme: Developing a scholarly teaching identity
Reflecting on your teaching practice or professional work can help you work out your goals, future directions, and plans to achieve them. This workshop will guide you through thinking about how you already engage in self-reflection in your professional roles and provide additional frameworks for reflective practice.
Workshop 2: Promoting Student Classroom Engagement

Theme: Pedagogical and technological skills in digital teaching and learning
This workshop meets requirements for the Certificate in College Teaching Competency 3: Incorporating technology in your teaching.
Student engagement is at the heart of teaching and learning. This workshop explores strategies for student engagement particularly addressing the challenge in online or multimodal learning. In discussing student engagement, we will also briefly explore ways to efficiently address issues with online class management.
Workshop 3: Accessibility of Online and Digital Resources

Theme: Accessibility and inclusion in digital teaching and learning
This workshop meets requirements for the Certificate in College Teaching Competency 2: Creating effective learning environments.
Digital components of courses require additional considerations to ensure that all learning materials and assessments are accessible for students with different needs and disabilities. Using the Universal Design for Learning framework and Quality Matters, we will provide recommendations for how to ensure your materials are accessible.
Workshop 4: Multimodality

Theme: Pedagogical and technological skills in digital teaching and learning
This workshop meets requirements for the Certificate in College Teaching Competency 3: Incorporating technology in your teaching.
“Multimodality” refers to the multiple ways that course content and delivery is offered online or in-person, for example by offering Zoom access to in-person classes, having online assessments, or posting videos of course sessions. In this workshop, we will cover important considerations for various modalities, how to decide on appropriate modalities, and how to develop course components for certain modalities.
